Lady Buffs Add Four for 2010-11
West Texas A&M Softball head coach Kevin Blaskowski announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent in the early signing period. Alyssa Lemos (SS; Grapevine, TX; Grapevine HS), Haley Colwell (OF; Sadler, TX; S&S Consolidated HS), Chloe Wurst (LaVerne, CA; Bonita HS) and Mallory Wyatt (UT; Watauga, TX; Keller HS) will join the Lady Buff Softball program for the 2010-11 academic year.
"I feel like we made some very strong additions to our program with this class," Blaskowski said. "We had to fill some specific needs in this class and I feel like we have done a great job of doing that. Adding one of the top shortstops in the state in Alyssa (Lemos) and a true speed threat in Haley (Colwell) will bolster our defense and offense. The addition of a lefty power pitcher like Chloe (Wurst) solidifies our pitching staff, while Mallory (Wyatt) gives us a talented utility player who can help us at a number of positions. The signing of this class is a major big step in taking WT Softball to the next level."
Alyssa Lemos, SS, Grapevine, TX
Lemos was named the District 5-5A Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. The three-time letter-winner was also named Team MVP her junior and sophomore years at Grapevine HS. The two-time all-District selection also led District 5-5A in runs scored as a junior. She has set single-season school records in runs scored and base on balls. She led her high school team to a Bi-District championship as a junior.
Off the softball field, Lemos is a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council. She is involved in a number of community service programs including the Ambassador program in which she has logged over 100 hours of community service.
Lemos also served as a member of the steering committee for the “Shoot Out for Roni”, a charity softball event established to benefit Ovarian Cancer Awareness. Lemos’ mother Roni lost her battle with Ovarian Cancer in September 2008.
Lemos plays travel softball for the Batbuster organization of Fort Worth.
"Alyssa is a very special young lady on and off the softball field," Blaskowski said. "I have been watching her play for a couple of years and she has always stood out as not only a talented player, but also a team leader. I believe she has the ability and determination to be an excellent collegiate softball player. But above all of that, what this young lady brings to our program is a lot of character and strength that will have a positive effect on everyone in the program and on our campus."
Haley Colwell, OF, Sadler, TX
Colwell has lettered each of the last three seasons at S&S Consolidated High School where her team has won three consecutive regional championships. As a sophomore, Colwell led her team to a state runner-up finish as well as being named an All-State shortstop as she posted a .667 batting average on the season. The three-year letter-winner also has received all-Texhoma Land honors three times.
Colwell also has excelled on the track where she has been a three-time regional qualifier in the 100-meter dash and long jump. She has also qualified in the triple jump and the sprint relay. Along with softball and track, Colwell has earned letters in volleyball, golf and cheerleading.
Colwell has also been involved in the Student Council and she is a four-year member of FFA.
Colwell plays travel ball for the Texas Glory organization of McKinney.
"Haley will be a true triple threat in our offensive line-up," Blaskowski said. "She is fast and she can use both the short game and long ball along with being a base stealing threat on the bases. She will bring a great speed dimension to our line-up. Defensively, there will not be much that will drop around her in the outfield either. She will be a very exciting player for fans to watch for four years."
Chloe Wurst, LHP, LaVerne, CA
Wurst received first team all-Miramonte League honors and was named team MVP at Bonita High School as a junior. She posted an 11-5 record with a 0.59 ERA as she led her team to a 20-6 record. She struck out 170 batters while walking only 24 in 117 innings pitched. Wurst also received All-San Gabriel Valley and All-Inland Valley honors.
In travel ball, Wurst is a member of the Team Smith Gold organization.
Wurst is a three-time Scholar Athlete and is also a member of the California Scholastic Federation.
"Chloe is a very talented pitcher who has a high level of energy in the circle,” Blaskowski said. "She has the potential to be a very strong power pitcher who can change speeds very well. The fact that she is left-handed is also a major plus as we do not have many lefties in the LSC. I am expecting a lot of strong outings from Chloe over her career as a Lady Buff.”
Mallory Wyatt, UT, Watauga, TX
Along with being named 1st team all-District 5-5A as a junior, Wyatt was also named the Catcher of the Year in the district. She led Keller HS to the area championship and they were also named the district co-champions. Wyatt led her team in batting average and on-base percentage and established a school record for walks in a season.
Wyatt is a member of the Fort Worth Batbuster Gold travel ball organization. Besides catching, Wyatt also has experience at both second and third base and in the outfield.
"Mallory is a true utility player who can help us at a number of positions," Blaskowski said. "She is a disciplined hitter who has a great eye at the plate. She just gets on base and she will be a table-setter for the big bats in our lineup. She is going to have a solid career as a Lady Buff."
The Lady Buffs will open their 2010 season on February 4th when they face East Central (OK) at the St. Mary’s Classic in San Antonio.
